Actually, I discovered a way around the bug (an annoying way, but a way nonetheless). I tried to play BG2 after I needed a break from trying to get out of the cantina (another half hour of moving, switch characters, moving, etc.). However, BG now had no sound. In fact, the only sounds that came out of anything were the sounds from starting up and shutting down the computer. No other sounds worked.

So, in desperation, I disabled the sound driver, then re-enabled it. Worked like a charm. However, any time I play the game, the sound works until I leave the program. Then it disables the sound again. So each time, I need to disable and re-enable the sound driver. Also, I uninstalled and re-installed the game again (I hadn't done so since I had updated the drivers) and the video works on default levels now. I can even view the movies (which used to crash to desktop). So I deleted my save game and started another soldier. The movies and sound add much to the game (real blaster and lightsaber sounds).

Anyway, I finally got it to work, even if I have to do a tedious step after playing each time...
