Oh.. I wiped them out before they became too powerful. Of course, then I had to tangle with the Byzantines, who quickly became the most powerful nation on the continent. They even bested The Horde. The good thing about the Egyptians is the relatively small front line (as long as you stay in the south). After you take Spain, you only have to defend two countries there. Personally, I snatched England and Western Europe as well. Then I waited for the Mongols too weaken the Byzantines before launching an all out invasion. It was still hard though, since they had sea superiority.
