No, you're quite correct about Glorfindel's death, and about the timeframe, as well. I'm just saying it's more likely that Tolkien had the Elves recycle a name than forget that anybody was supposed to be dead.
(After all, "Glorfindel" only means 'goldenhair,' and so would conceivably be a rather common appelation, especially since the only other noteworthy Elf of that name had been dead since the First Age.)
