I'd agree with the suggestions to try Planescape: Torment. A fantastic game!
Another one I'd recommend is Arcanum - it's semi fantasy/magic and semi industrial/tech based, the character development options are fantastic, and the world is huge with one major plotline and lots of side quests. The game is never identical twice as some quests/party recruits/parts of the plot are based on how you develop your character. It's a top down view point & click style RPG rather like BG1 and 2, the graphics aren't fantastic but the gameplay and scope more than make up for that. Combat can be either real time, turn based, or fast turn based (I recommend fast turn based for optimum combat strategy without being bogged down with the details of every sword swing/gunshot).
