I loved this game. When it came out, I said if FF VII was like a good movie, FFT was like a good book. I agree that it is hard, though. And there is a sudden, major leap in difficulty at the end. I went into the final battle and died many many times. Finally, I managed to get past that fight only to realize there was another immediately after, so I didn't have a chance to heal, re-stock, etc. After tremendous frustration and multiple attempts, I got past the second battle (having to play though both on each attempt)-- only to discover it led to a third immediately after. I finally looked for help in a game guide and it said "Don't even try this battle until you are level 50". I went back and checked my character and saw that I was level 29. (I am guessing at the numbers-- it was a long time ago. I just remember being about 22 levels lower than they said was the minimum.) I was mad, because my only other save point was like 8 hours earlier, but I was also proud that I had done 2/3 of the battle with characters that the strategy guide considered vastly underpowered. Yay, me.
This was a great game, but you just have to really think out your strategies and build good characters.
