Just started playing Fallout: Tactics last night. Despite critics the game is really good, it is not a Role Playing game, well actually that is debatable as you are role playing soldiers and the best way to take down the enemy. OK so there is very little dialogue but for Tactical combat it is not necessary. You get your missions and do them. Just finished the first mission, and I will describe one of my favorite battles or slaughter in this case.
A lone enemy, a raider is in a guard house, which is basically sand bags with a roof over it. I can't have any of my guys run across the field without getting severely hit by this guard. So I use my stealth skill and have every one crawl along on their bellies (Yes, one of the great things about tactics is you can place your characters in standing, crouched, or lying) up to the guard house. Then I positioned them around three sides of the sand bags. When they were positioned I had them stand up and blast away. Very Nice!!!! Poor raider didn't stand a chance!!!!
With standing, crouched, or lying tactics you can jump up from behind crates shoot the enemy and jump back down for cover. The final battle was pretty intense as I had no choice but to go in as the raiders are to smart to give chase and walk into an ambush. I was up on the roof of the bulding with two holes but could not see anyone so came back down. It may have been possible to place two snipers up here and have one person go in to drag them out a bit. Maybe next time.
Other things you can do are climb on guard towers to snipe at people below. After getting past the first round I now have a slew of characters with a varying degree of skills to chose from including driving vehicles, and I can build a party of six. Have not driven or found any vehicles yet but sounds sweet.
