Sometimes I guess there is no choice but to reboot. It shouldn't lock all the time like that though.

You can still switch to Mage anytime I was at level 6 when I switched. If you switch now you may be able to learn and use some of the spells of a higher level that I couldn't. I did not have a problem to finish the game even though became a mage at level 6.
