Sythe the undead can only be killed by fire, holy water, and or flash bombs. I am completely unaware of being able to take down some bell for a distraction. And the undead don't really smell you out, you just happen to put yourself right where they are set to go. You have to pick up their pattern and avoid making noise, i.e. running in well lit areas or on hard surfaces. It can be challenging, but you get the hang of it after a few attempts. Don't forget to use your rope arrows. Great for escaping the odd swarm of undead guys. Oh yeah, while the solid undead cannot be killed, a couple million swings with the magic sword will take down the ghostly ones.
