Personally I preferred fallout 2 over fallout... but I did play fallout 2 first, so I suppose that makes sense. It's always the way.... when you play a sequel for the first time, then go back to play a predecessor... you are always critical of all the features that you had come to accept as standard in the updated setup you have played on. For me, I found fallout somewhat alien due too all the frustration surrounding absence of features specifically updated for Fallout 2.

Of course, had I actually played fallout first, it would have been another story.

As for the Bethesda Fallout 3... I am very hopeful. Many feared it would simply be "Morrowind with guns", however after reading several interviews I am quite convinced the Bethesda team thoroughly do understand and enjoy the fallout series, and will be developing it in its best interest. Its probably the best the franchise could have hoped for...

And as for Fallout Tactics... in its own right its a fairly decent game, but pale in respect to what it could... ought... to have been. Note that this was the first fallout game I had ever played, and while I enjoyed it immensely at the time, after a few hours on Fallout 2 I could never go back to it. There was allot about the game design, about the graphics and about the overall package that was to be desired, but WHY OH WHY they packaged it as a real time strategy and not a role-playing game I will never forgive them for. No doubt about it, the combat system, weapon list and everything associated was a great advancement over the fallout 2 one... but ultimately was not enough to BASE the entire game around. As superior as the combat system was... the battles were never as much fun as taking on the Metzger's entire entourage just to free Vic, clearing out the secret raider base, or joining Lara for the hopelessly outnumbering gang war against tyler, and actually winning after your 5th try.

Come to think of it I actually feel like playing it again now...
the only problem is that there ultimately is not a whole lot of replay value in the way of character diversity. It is a game that pretty much forces you to adopt a very strict character type if you hope to play the game to its fullest.
if you stray from this character type, you are only restricting your own rewards.. almost all of which are *just* outside of your grasp anyway, just to torment you. Sad.
