Personally, I've only ever owned two graphics cards...one nVidia GeForce 2 MX and an ATI x800GT. The first was bought to play Morrowind, and it did, albeit not that terribly well (couldn't turn view distance as high as I'd like). The second went into "Hosscat."

The reason I chose the first one was availability and ignorance. The reason for the second one was it was the cheapest card with 512 MB onboard RAM, which I had assumed was the most important aspect about a graphics card at the time. Beyond that, ATI made the graphics processor for the Gamecube, so I was already fairly impressed with what they could do.
