I'd go so far as to say that its a universal phenomenon for at least some small part of our Morrowind experience.
However, I tend to think that because the consequences/punishments for stealing are so insignificant and fairly easily avoided, the game practically goads one into the occasional burst of kleptomania even if you try so fervently hard for roleplaying reasons, not to. [img]smile.gif[/img]
Eventually the thrill of no-consequence based pilfering wore a bit thin on me, but the nagging desire to loot and hoard (healing potions was a big one for me) never ever died. My monk never ceased to admire the sheen of Daedric armour and weaponry.
There's a basic chain of causality for this:
Raw Materials=barter=septims=training=level ups.

Gets kind of embedded into our thinking subliminally, I guess.
