I'll try to help with the alchemy part, although it'll pretty much be what Aelia Jusa said.
Buy a mortar and pestle, then try to equip it. A new screen will come up, and one box will have the mortar and pestle in it. The boxes to the right of the mortar and pestle are for the optional equipment (alembic, calcinator, retort). The four boxes below the alchemy equipment boxes are for ingredients. The seemingly random items (like plant leaves and mushrooms. If you have a low alchemy skill, anything with ? as the description can be used, as long as it's not already a potion) can be put here. (Increasing the number of the same ingredient has no effect on the potion itself. You always use only one of each ingredient) The large box on the right side of the screen will show the effects. If nothing is there, the potion would have no effect. Change ingredients until you get an effect (any combination of bread, crab meat, or eggs will make a "restore fatigue" potion, to give you an example). Red is a bad effect (possibly self damaging), but even "bad" potions are worth money. You'll probably have to attempt potions a lot before you are successful, if your alchemy skill is low. Kinda like how you are usually unsuccessful repairing things if your skill for that is low. I hope this helps.
Oh, and I would reccomend that you leave the optional equipment somewhere safe when you're not using it, since it can weigh a lot.
