oru, i think with the GotY edition that is changed such that when they say "goodbye" or "now your going to get it" then its okay. i just always try to talk to them again and if it says "this character is in combat" then you can hit them. i think maybe you didnt taunt them enough and thats where you had a problem... you have to succeed at taunting them at least three times.
