The pause-for-loads are very small in my game: the only time I notice at all is if I'm levitating at a very high speed, and the computer has to draw a lot of graphics every second.
I have noticed that the merchants I always sell to [scamp] take longer to load their giant inventories, though...
Turning off atmospheric effects, shadows, or even reducing the resolution should all help if you find it too irritating.
