from what i have experienced with my elven archer, they are basically the best good PCs you can make for the beginning, and on into the end. My 19 Dex, 18/27 Str elven archer had a lovely new-game Thac0 of 0. Base thaco 14, composite longbow, Longbow++++, elven bonus, and archer bonus added up to 75% of the kills in the party, and lots of dead goblins.
He's currently at -11 thaco at level 13, right in the middle of chp3. if this continues, he will simply be insane. With mazzy, valygar, jaheira, nalia, and jan, everyone has 17-19 dex. fun. most baddies are quite dead far before they reach me, provided i concentrate my fire on them. This has caused me to completely overhaul my former fighting and magic strategies.
You should try an archer! It's great!
