Couple of questions:

Is there a point after which you can't (or shouldn't) depart from the main quest to pursue other quests? [As far as the main quest goes, it's time for me to rescue old whatshername the librarian in Vivec]

Relatedly, is there a particularly good time to install the expansions? Can you do the expasion packs after you've completed the main quest?
