You must fight vampires until you get a message saying you got Emophilia something. You can the decide to get cured in 3 days, and nothing happens, or become a vampire after 72 hours.

Vampires have clans: you will automatically join the clan of the vampires who infected you. Each clan has different bonuses, so choose wisely:

As to the quest items, there is one ring, Marara's ring, which you can get only with a vampire quest, and it's very powerful. Eltonbrand can be got in that way only as well.
