For any quest that asks you to get a certain object, any one of that type will complete the quest. It doesn't have to be the specific item from the specific location. For example - the scrap metal costs about 10 gp in most alchemist shops. You could buy it (if you'd rather spend cash) to complete the quest, but offing the creature is admittedly more fun.

And yes, the lever is on a boulder just north of the door. You should see it as you cross the bridge heading east.
