Approach the guard from the opposite side of the sword (or whatever other target, apply this scenario in anything you're trying to steal). Get close enough so he speaks, thus turning. Once he's turned (w/ his back to the prize), then back off, leaving him facing that way. Now, sneak around to the steps, jump the rail towards the beds, and sorta jump up onto the top bunk...sometimes helps to be off the same line-of-sight axis by as much as you can manage. Now F5 as a safety net. Try your sneaking or invis...I used sneak. Got this sword and a whole set of glass armor (and lots other stuffs) using this method in different places over the weekend. Also, use pillars and posts and whatever else you can to block the views of guards. Honestly, I feel like I've stolen "too much" already...
