You can also just plop the bow in question into his inventory via a console command. Go into the editor and scrounge around in the weapons list until you find the bow in question. That means after firing up the editor you pull up data files off the file menu, Doubleclick on the morrowind.esm file, and wait patiently while it loads. Then look at the nice list of objects and click on the weapons tab, and patiently scroll down the list until you find the bow in question. Then drop that (saving nothing), and head into the game. Once in game, bring up the console (tilde key) and type this minus the outside quotes "player->Additem "objectnamehere" 1" . That will plop the bow in his inventory without risk to the rest of the game world.
I guiltily admit I did that when I found I'd inadvertantly sold my hlaalu disguise helm to my favourite fence and he first wore it and then poofed it. (Yes I gave him other EXPENSIVE helms but while he put them on, my helm never showed up in his inventory again, even after sleeping a day or two away.) Rather than lose 30 odd hours of playtime I grumped and hacked.

PS.. I checked and the item was nicely obvious in the list... the name is "bonebiter_bow_unique".
