you have to actually sneak, love.
if you haven't remapped your keys, you gotta press L Ctrl/W(forward) and hang in the shadows. if you are successfully sneaking, and NO one sees you, then you will have a special new icon in the lower left of your screen.
it will flash if someone glimpses you, and disappear altogether if you are spotted and someone is staring right at you.
btw: even with an accomplished thief like my topless assassin
i find myself getting spotted alla time. it turns out that sometimes i discover other "sneaking" thieves lurking around. i can see their shadows flick around on the ground when i'm in "sneak" mode.
