Te'Oma couldn't read minds, although it was one of his great ambitions to master the skill, but he could read emotions. Everybody has natural reactions. Whether they're concious ones or not. And Te'Oma, using the sensitive olfactory receptors in his head tentecles, was highly skilled in doing so.
