They're a mixed blessing in this case in that on the one hand they might offer some protection by misdirecting physical attacks, on the other they allow the basic location of the invisible caster to be visually determined rather easily as the images always remain close to the caster.
Note that unlike the flawed implementation of this spell in the BG series of CRPGs, the mirror images only offer protection by misdirecting attacks seeking to specifically target the caster. They offer no damage reduction in the case of an area of effect spell or if the caster moves over a trap. Here, in fact, they make the caster more vulnerable to attacks that target a general area as they make clear the general location of the caster.
