I think he's one of those invincible characters in the game that are used to keep the game balanced a bit, you're not supposed to run around with Drizzt's stuff. Therefore he's also not meant to fight in combat thus the invincibility... Some sort of Biff the Understudy-like mechanism to keep your character from getting too powerful I think.
