ic: THE TAVERN
Shortly after daybreak the workmen arrive. The rattling of their wagon drew the attention of Maria and Bartleby who meet them just outside the building.
“Ach! Such a small crew it is, and there be so much work to be doin’ about the place! Why ‘tis nearly half o’ me building that needs repairin’! All of that blowin’ and stormin’ and rainin’ and thunderin’ up and down and through me hallways! And the walls and me doors and me furniture! And ye be comin’ with only five workmen, lad???? Why for the love of whatever god has nothin’ to do with the weather, what were ye thinkin’?” His face red from having forgotten to breathe, Bartleby stomps his foot and exhales loudly.
Laughing softly Maria places a hand on the tavern owner’s shoulder. “Ach!” she says, gently mocking his bluster, “sure’n ye be quick to assume things before even seein’ the lads work!” Winking at the builder, she speaks again in her normal voice, “Besides, I’m sure the rest of the crew are still gathering supplies in town and these men simply wanted to get an early start on the work.”
“Errr, yes,” the builder replies, “The others’ll be along ......” Swiftly changing the subject, he turns to Bartleby and asks, “And where, sir, would you like us to begin.”
“Where to begin, indeed, lad! Ye can start by fitting me building out with a proper front door!”
