As she speaks the winds bear her words to his ears. There are images as well, images, if that is what they are to be called, that shine with a sudden and vivid power in his thoughts. You have brought out what the fates said would never be brought out again. These words strike him, as they would any of his people, with particular force. --She has surrendered too long to these 'fates'.-- She turns from him and he looks at her as he did those hours ago in the inn, looking simply to see the one who is before him. She would have hope for me ..... and yet she would deny it to herself ....

The thunderclap is deafening and the hilltop itself shakes. “Time and again you open yourself to me and then look away as if I would cast you aside." The rain grows heavy as he speaks. “I do not reject you, woman. Nor will I allow you to reject yourself." He bends to her and, taking her hands, lifts her to her feet. "I prefer you to live your life and not cast it aside, whether for my sake or that of any other." He pauses and gathers his breath. "No, KayLisa, I would ask much more of you than the surrender of your life for my sake – I would have the living of your life by my side." Again, a pause to collect his breath. "My native tongue has no word for what you name fate – destiny does not bind me to you." His eyes burn with a fierce independence, "I bind myself to you ...."

His eyes soften as he continues, "Perhaps there is no escaping the exiling curses that stand over the two of us, perhaps there is – but, escape or not, this, and no place else, is where we stand." The winds fall suddenly still and the rain slows to a whisper. He brushes a tear from her cheek allowing his touch to linger. When he speaks again, there is no storm in his voice. "This, and no place else, is where I embrace you. But what will you embrace in this place KayLisa, you who are so dangerously balanced between hope and despair? Will your life be your own, or will fate live it for you?.” He falls silent, then, his hands holding on to hers.
