**In the commander's private chambers**
(an electronic knock announces an officer)
"Enter."
'Sir, we have reason to believe it is one of the cyborgs who killed the janitor. Shall we call a trial?'
"Yes. Even if the man was just a janitor, we can't have someone murdering the rest of the crew. Notify Vincent and any other important staff you can think of. I shall meet you all in three hours."
The security officer departed, and Sir Legolas followed not long behind. He marched straight on towards the High Admiral's chambers, only to find them empty. When he peers into the bedroom, he sees a bucket full of a transparent muck. The Sir did not bother to investigate the stuff any closer, but just as he wondered why Neb did not simply use one of the toilets, it stirred.
The sub-commander realised that this was, in fact, none other than the High Admiral of the Extrinnigan legion himself, vast asleep. Silently, he left the room. Though he had no idea what kind of creature Neb was exactly, but if he was anything like the other shapeshifters he had come across, he would sleep for days. In fact, he had not seen him around for quite some time now.
Sir Legolas rubbed a scar on his cheek at the memory of the other shapeshifters. They had not been kind, a killsquad from earth.
Over a dozen years ago, he was a rather succesful army commander on Earth. He repelled alien invaders and humans both in the service of the Eurasian government, lead by Freddy the second. After his death at the hands of the Intulli, the not-quite-yet Sir Legolas was reassigned to a legion guarding slaves, but at the time there was some confusion as to who was to replace Freddy. In the end, one of the traditional catholic popes was selected, but not everyone was happy with the desicion. Weisi was not, and neither was Johnny.
Legolas agreed to help Weisi assassinate the pope, that was, he and his troops guarded the palace until the assassins were clear.
But then, they had to run.
Only Johnny, Weisi and one catholic by the name of Pierre remained as candidates, but Pierre was quick to act. He ordered shapeshifters to attack the others, and Legolas, and the assassins.
Somehow, Johnny had managed to fight them off, using an ancient technique called the 'Foon'. After he discovered he had the power, Johnny adopted the name Freddy, the third. He was the next pope in line, the last one left. He would be the third pope to wield the Foon in centuries. And he would become the third pope, not a catholic.
Weisi hijacked a ship and departed for Mars, to set up a colony. And Legolas, his men and the assassins fought the shapeshifters to buy him time.
There were nine of them, three in each killsquad. They murdered most of his men, but they stood their ground. The killsquads qould have one transform into a heavy weapon, or disguise themselves as bugs or grassor a gas, before shifting to humanoid and slaying someone. Then, they'd be gone again. Fighting them was near impossible.
But they did. So many guns, and the assassins' fighting prowess brought down their numbers in the end, until there were but two left. And Legolas, and one of the assassins.
Tired of the constant shapeshifting, they eventually settled down and formed into human shapes. Humans with very sharp claws.
Combat was short, and brutal. They gutted the assassin while Legolas emptied his guns in one's head. It did not have it's brains up there, but it was enough to kill it nonetheless.
With only a weary shapeshifter and a Legolas with empty guns, there was notheing to do but fight hand to claw. He won. End of story.
But it did scar him before it went down. And he dared not think about what would have happened had there been another, or if they could shift more often. But it had passed. He came to Mars and was knighted by Weisi himself. He worked in the slavemines there, before he was made sub-commander and given permission for this mission.
Tearing loose from his thoughts, he turned and left the room. He would go to the bridge and see if they could establish a contact with Mars. Chances were, they were too far away by now. Not that there would be much to say, just a confirmation they were still in one piece, and heading towards Alpha Centauri.
After that, the trial. Then he would check on the cargo ship, taking a walk around there himself to heighten the morale. A busy day ahead.
