There was 2 ways that I have seen the portrait disappear:
Flesh to Stone - Will petrify your person and remove them from the party. You can de-petrify (?) them and then get them to join you again.
or
Disintigrate - Bye Bye, never to be seen again. (kinda like Drow equipment)
That is whey I love to use that Q key (quick-save)
