Her tired eyes roam randomly over various items within her line of vision. Too tired to think much... why bother to think? What is there to think anyway? Sniffing, she reaches out with her left hand for the box of tissue on the table, trying to balance herself without having to stand up and walk over.
Having secured a piece, she blows her nose once. Not bothering to mind her face, which is now streaked with dried tears. Why does it hurt so much still? Perhaps because that overwhelming love they shared still dwells in her heart. Unspoilt... no... spoilt once.
She remembers the day when the wedding ring had been washed down the sink by accident.
How she had struggled to retrieve it! Yet it was impossible to trace it. First his disappearance, then the loss of the ring. It was a further sign that she did not deserve Albert. The heavens were punishing her, she had told herself many a time.
"Perhaps if I had retrieved that ring, you would have returned. Is that it, Albert?" She whispers, almost in a daze now. "Do you know how hard I tried to get it? Do you know how I was almost raped by those plumbers I called in to help me find it?"
She falls silent again, shaking her head gently.
