I played BG2 without BG1 and enjoyed it... there were references I didn't laugh at, but I understood that when my character got the choice to say "Hey, don't I know you?" it was probably someone who I'd had a good experience helping if I was GOOD, and had probably harmed in some way if I was EVIL.

If you want to get more of the "backstory", take Minsc and Jaheira with you. They'll react and fill you in on stuff as you go along.

However, the story of BG2 is plenty interesting without knowing anything about BG1. It's rich and the characters are pretty well developed.

My advice is: get a LOT of practice hitting the Q key to quick save, then just try stuff. It's fun to explore, especially if you're not worried about losing a couple of hours worth of "work" [img]smile.gif[/img]
