Ni Deng stiffled a yawn and stretched his ageold limbs. Looking about his darkened cabin, it seemed his eyes were playing tricks on him. The room seemed to swagger back and forth even though he lay still.
He could hear commotion outside. Thunder, howling wind, people screaming so hard their voices would be hoarse in the morning.
Rising slowly from his bed, Ni Deng grabbed hold of his walking stick and made it to the door. Peering outside, he saw nothing. A lightning flash illuminated the ship, and showed chaos. A second flash, and Ni Deng spotted the liferaft opposite his cabin.
Relieved, Ni Deng returned to his still warm bed.
