The only drawbacks to building the Crom Faeyr are:
You combine 2 STR-enhancing items to make 1, so if you've got 3 party members with low STR, one of them is going to have to be weak again, at least until you get another Strength girdle near the very end of BG2. Also, the Crom only confers 25 STR when it's actually in your hand (either hand), so using other weapons might be problematic: Say you use the STR bonus to equip some really heavy Full Plate on Viconia--if she needs to use her Sling, she's suddenly going to be too weak to move, until she equips the Crom again.
The Crom Faeyr also does some lightning damage with each hit, even though it doesn't say so in the weapon's description.
