Yes, you can just join right in, as long as your character hooks up to one of the current storylines any time soon.
There's a city somewhere where there's a group of people seeking treasure, down in the sewers,
in that same city is a man on horseback who is headed for a village in the woods
and in that village there's a small group of people out to avenge some deaths.
Your character does not know this (or maybe he does) but it's a small world, so who knows, he may just stumble into one of the groups.
