Role-playing games use dice with different numbers of sides ( eg 4,6,8,12,or 20 sided) to determine things like whether or not a character hits an opponent, and then if a hit is made, what amount of damage results. The amount of damage done depends on the kind of weapon you're using. So if a sword does 1D10 damage, it means a 10-sided dice is rolled to determine the damage done each time a hit is made, and the hit will do between 1 and 10 points of damage. 2D4 means roll two 4-sided dice and add the two rolls, so a hit with this weapon will do 2-8 points of damage.
