That may have been a mistake. They might need to be alive to recieve the head in order to "trigger" the sucessful completion of the quest and the return of the merchants. Barring this, its important to note that some of the merchants only come out at daytime, and dissapear a little before nightfall. I guess youll need to ease up on that itchy trigger finger of yours.
