Heh, glad I didn't read this thread til I was done. I like flying by the seat of my pants.
I befriended Raskalion just to get enough info out of him. Then I killed him to fulfil the Black Hand quest. Then I got a dagger which I didn't even know what to do with until I walked into the pawn shop. Wow! What a great surprise!
I then went back and killed Scanthril since he had no other use for me
