It's been a while since I did the Snake Temple.. but, it seems to me that when you open the room with the narrow chute in the center (and all the monkeys drop down from above)... that one of these monkeys is carrying a monkey idol.. so, if you haven't killed monkey and found an idol afterwards... he's probably still running around somewhere.
