I had a pretty tough time with Firkaag at lower levels, but after him dragons were easy. In fact, I don't think Adalon even got a lick in. I had my theif set a time stop trap and a spike trap, and Edwin cast Dragon's Breath and that was all she wrote. Once I discovered Chaotic Commands, my abject fear of illithids quickly subsided as well. Some parts of the Unseeing Eye quest can be a little hairy. I've managed to hold out ok against the liches so far, although I haven't fought them all yet.
The toughest battle I have been in as of yet would have to be in the Watchers Keep. (TOB expansion, but still in Shadows of Amn). One of the keys you turn when opening the final seal throws one of everything nasty at you: beholder, djinni, succubus, you name it, and they are all high powered spellcasters. I cursed so much there is probably still a green haze hanging somewhere over the North Atlantic. After several attempts, I finally had to lower the difficulty not once but twice from the BGII setting. At that point I didn't care about the experience points anymore, I just wanted to get through there and find out what was awaiting me in the chamber beneath and finish the #%$^& quest.
