You can backstab with:
- Daggers
- Short Swords
- Long Swords
- Scimitars/Wakazishis/Ninja-tos
- Katanas
- Clubs
- Quarterstaves
HOWEVER, there are some specific items which are invisibly labled "Not Suitable for Backstabbing", including Valygar's Katana and the Staff of the Magi.
Keep trying, you'll find something good to backstab with.
