Really?? Hmm, I *did* save that particular event because it was so weird, but it didn't really slow anything down during loading/saving. And I finished off that particular game about 7 months ago, and I didn't have any problems of the kind you're describing.
Perhaps I was lucky then, or you were unlucky...
