Wild Mages are fun, being able to cast Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting in Chapter 1 is nice. Suuuure, you have a better chance at winning that lottery than making a Nahal's Reckless Dweomer work properly, but that is where the fun is. Basically, those who loved Chromatic Orb, will love Wild Mages, because you are sort of playing against the odds. In addition, you have the Chaos Shield and Improved Chaos Shield which assist you in making sure your spells work properly. Also, Wild Mages can cast
any spell, they have no opposition school and still gain the bonus spell slots of a Specialist Mage. Whether you be a powergamer, a roleplayer, or a mixture of both, give the Wild Mage a spin, it is good for a laugh, and by the way, Wild Surges are not that
frequent, they only occur
5% of the time, and when you cast Nahal's Reckless Dweomer.
The most important point though... is that there is
no other class that can cause it to rain cows except the Wild Mage, and that is all that matters.

If not a Sorcerer casting total oblivion, then a Cavalier meting out justice. Otherwise, I think I will just be a Blade and torture my enemies with, "My Heart Will Go On".
