everyone has different strategies. Some people like to put traps around him and stuff, or use a lot of cloudkills. I think two very important steps are to first cast magic resistance on him (yes, on the dragon- this will lower his magic resistance from like 100% to like 25%- a nice bug in the game) and to get the first hit in by telling him you're not going to fight him and then attacking him while he's still blue.
