Personally id go for katanas, whenever i use valygar i always give him 2 of those & let him 'go to work'.
Strong magical katanas are rare, but after the underdark you can try to get the celestial fury which in my opinion is the best 1handed weapon (except crom fayer) in the game. being able to stun high level monsters with it can be a lifesaver in big battles.
