Korgan got himself a decent axe in Nalia`s keep. I noticed it in the Golem room where you pick up one of the flail heads, hasted Korgan and had him nick it. He took a beating, but survived. I don`t remember the axe stats though.
Also, there is a good throwing axe in the sewers that always returns after you throw it.
