Well, if you can get through Bodhi's Maze and what comes next with AC=6 leather, then you'll be much more satisfied than if you had all the cool armour/weapons in the game, and is too easy! If you had done as many quests as possible before going off to Spellhold after Imoen, you'd have lots better stuff to equip, but best of luck to you.
I found that the best way to play the game for the first time is to not use ANY hints/cheats etc and try to finish it. That's the way I've played all of the Infinty Engine RPGs. After doing it once on my own, I have a look at some walkthroughs to see what I missed, and then powergame it with various combinations of chars/NPCs etc.
Now, for the ultimate challenge, I'm trying it solo with a Kensai that I'll dual to a mage. So far, I've done lots of running away and resting!
