I'm no expert, but I'm no beginner either.
And here is my opinion on the best mage equipment.
Staff: Staff of Magi
Belt: Inertial Barrier
Robe: Vecna
Boots: Speed (personal preference)
Helmet: Circlet of Netheril - Cespenar upgrade
Rings: Wizardry & Gaxx (Gaxx is better used on a melee type in your party though, so maybe Ring of Acuity or a second Wizardry if you don't mind the mess)
Misc: Amulet of Power, Bracers of Defense: AC 3, many cloaks - swap them out as needed
