If you want a nice little spoiler as to how to create 2 or 3 characters for your single player game reply to this post and ill tell you. I discovered this little gem while trying to solve my mage woes, and ended up with a party containing:
Me (Paladin)
Minsc
Jaihera
Imoen
NPC (my created conjurer)
NPC (my created skald)
this saves all the multi player hassles
