BG I is definatly worth it. The difference though with NPCs in BG II is the amazing depth. The character interactions, backstories and romances are all much deeper (well in the case of romances there was none in BG I).

So from a tactical standpoint you have less choices in BG II but from a roleplaying perspective its alot more enjoyable to see your npcs horse around with each other (or get mad at each other hehe)
