one way is to block the bottom of the stairs with your tanks and maybe a summoned creature or two - make sure the tanks have a supply of healing potions. (things can get too hectic to rely on healing spells).
the rest of the party (hopefully equipped with at least +1 missile weapons)stays at the top of the stairs and lays the smack down with copious amounts of arrows, bolts, bullets and, from your mages, magic missiles. The ghasts should go down reasonably fast, then concentrate all your attention on any/each assassin as they show up. Try to keep the party together when an assassin goes invisible.
