Hang in there. After the Chess game you have one more level to complete which should take an hour or two at most. The last fight in Durlag's is a good tester for grand finaly. You also will get one more good fight in Ulgoth's Beard to test your mettle before the Last showdown.
If you looked at Durlag's Tower as more of a side story line that effects the surrounding areas of Baldurs Gate; instead of just a way to get exp. I think you would maybe have enjoyed it more. I found Durlag's Tower to be quite satisfying and challenging. It don't just test your combat prowess, but your wits.
